Lovely La Cabane

I have frequented this bustling wine bar on Hollywood road many times but mostly for their amazing French wine selection, friendly French service and casual atmosphere with swings at the front and back and wine bottles and chalk boards all over. This week, we decided to go for their set lunch offering.

La Cabane offers a choice of soup, salad or their egg mimosa. Intrigued as I was by the mimosa, we both went for their mouthwatering salads.

One great thing is that their salad is seasonal, as it should be! This is by no means a boring garden salad, today we got beetroot, arugula, tomatoes and spring onion- very fresh and tasty!

For mains, we had a choice of 3, pork on a bed of spinach with polenta, walnut and broccoli quiche or the pan fried Tilapia. I was recommended the quiche and it did not disappoint. Unlike many quiches it was not greasy or oily. The base was quite thick which made the taste quite rich as well as the generous amount of walnuts. Thankfully, the portion size was just right to not make it too heavy- French food is notoriously rich after all!

My friend’s pork was a little bit salty and slightly chewy, yet overall a tasty dish. I have always found polenta quite bland no matter what has been done to it and this was no exception. Maybe something else on the side would have worked better.

Desserts in La Cabane have always been amazing so I wasn’t going to pass up on the option to the set. My friend and I shared the daily dessert of carrot cake. This was not a typical British carrot cake with sweet cream cheese on top, but more a ‘healthy’ version as my friend described it. You could tell that there was a lot of egg in this as it was thickened, however it did not taste too heavy. Overall, lovely and not too sweet.

Verdict: The lunch set is fairly reasonable for the quality of ingredients. You get a starter, main and drink (inclusive of wine!) for 140HKD (no service charge included).  Dessert or cheese is an extra 40 HKD if you are in the mood. Service is consistently good, most likely because they do not charge for service. I recommend La Cabane for a casual wine and cheese night too! Don’t forget their amazing desserts!
