Serge et Le Phoque- taste of France in the heart of Wan Chai market

The surroundings are certainly not what you would expect for this surprisingly contemporary, gorgeous looking restaurant.  The ‘view’ aside, the location is pretty convenient, very close to the new ‘Avenue’ area of Wan Chai and it’s pretty perfect for people watching, if you can take your eyes off the food that is!

Our first plate was the burrata and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The tomatoes, our waiter very proudly pointed out were imported from Japan. That amazing flavour and juiciness that you unfortunately do not get so easily with tomatoes bought here was incredible! We gobbled this dish up very easily along with the bread served on the table.

Next up was the octopus with the thousand year egg. They unfortunately gave only a slice of the egg which we were quite disappointed with and the octopus was burnt. Shame as the ingredients were very clearly good quality.


Then came two plates; grilled aubergine (eggplant for you Americans) and sardines. The sardines were unusually with raspberries and peas, not extremely fishy, but what was great was the jus underneath. The aubergine was one of the best dishes of the night- not bitter and pan fried to perfection.


We decided to be cheeky and get dessert- we actually had a bit of a miscommunication with our waiter and received two desserts each instead of sharing two! The chocolate cake was decadent, rich, beautiful as compared to the somewhat flavourless and disappointing macaroon.


Verdict: We were super impressed with the quality of ingredients, everything is beautifully presented and the atmosphere is great, something you wouldn’t expect given the surroundings. Overall a very pleasant dining experience and would recommend you go on date night as it can be pricey, at around 500 HKD pp.
