Whenever I recommend the cooked food markets for a meal, I get the predictable look of skepticism. What most don’t realise is that you can find some true hidden gems in here, albeit with no ambience but with no pretension either.
ABC kitchen is actually the no fuss venue I chose for my birthday 2 years ago and here’s why- great food, no service charge, attentive service throughout and no corkage!
I went for lunch this time, the market was surprisingly packed. The set lunch menu was almost illegibly written on the chalk board by one of the tables. Squinting our eyes, we found out that the soup comes at 10 HKD, but we went straight for the mains. We ordered the linguini pasta with chicken and eggs benedict plus a complimentary drink (we ordered the usual dong lengcha)
Both dishes were on our table fairly quickly. The linguini pasta was cooked just right, the béchamel sauce was thick enough and they were quite generous with the meat.
My friend enjoyed the eggs benedict, noting that the hollandaise was not too thick and the eggs were poached just right!
We decided to indulge ourselves with the crème brulee and panna cotta. The crème brulee was not too sweet but the caramelised sugar layer was a bit too thick for my taste. The panna cotta was served with a blackberry coulis which really complimented the vanilla panna cotta.
Verdict: Overall a pleasant dining experience at 100 HKD each for a main, dessert and drink, although getting there may be a bit of a stretch for those who work in Central. If you are looking for a no frills, no fuss dining experience, abc just like its name, keeps it pleasantly simple.
